Hosted by Yuliana Hernandez and Mitzi Jimenez at the Alief Neighborhood Center, Session 5: Community Engagement and DEI, the speakers were from a diverse group which included City Council, educational institutions and resource centers. They focused on challenges faced by underserved communities, understanding the needs of the users and how designers and architects can play a role in enhancing the quality of life and increasing engagement in the community. In addition, the session dealt with critical issues faced by people with disabilities – activities were designed for participants to first-hand experience some of the challenges faced by people with disabilities and helped emphasize the importance of actively focusing on all user groups while designing.
